Battle Dress & Weapons For battle or tournament the men wore hose held up on a belt at the waist, also suspended from this belt were chain mail leggings or later the poleyns and schynbalds. A haqueton - a quilted jacket or leather jacket - designed to absorb body blows and to give padding and bulk was worn under the hauberk, a very heavy knee to thigh length chainmail shirt. Over this a jupon or surcote was worn. This was a linen tunic often split at the sides and front and back. This was cut to shin length. Emblazoned on the front and back was the wearer’s coat of arms so that he could be distinguished on the field by friend or servant. The jupon was first brought back from the crusades as the mail hauberk became so hot that something was needed to protect the wearer from the sun and (in England) the rain. A coil of linen or paded arming cap was worn under the helm. A belt, sometimes with a shoulder cross strap was worn to which were secured the sword and dagger or shortsword. Weapons
